True Westfjords / Dropi

True Westfjords produces cod liver oil that is exclusively cold processed to maintain all its natural properties.  The oil contains pure and natural vitamins, omega-3 and other nutrients. No artificial ingredients are added.  Dropi cod liver oil is made from fresh Icelandic cod (Gadus morhua), caught daily from the clean fishing grounds of the North-Atlantic Ocean around the deep fjords of Westfjords in Iceland.

Story

In the 19th century, people used to store the fish liver in a containar or in a hole in the ground outside their homes. When the liver had released its oil, the oil was scooped up and bottled. During winter, each family member would take a sip of the bottle as the oil was already then considered to make people healthier and stronger.

Uses of fish oil through the centuries

In Iceland, fish oil (I. lýsi) has been used for various purposes, including:

• as lighting fuel to soften and waterproof clothes
• as medicine
• to reduce boat rolling
• to make boats watertight

Earliest known documentation of the oil is in the tithe laws (I. tíundarlög) from 1096. The laws suggest that any man paying tithe should pay 1 litre of fish oil to his church.

Saga

According to Landnámabók (The Book of Settlement) Bolungarvík was settled by Þuríður sundafyllir. Her nickname, “sundafyllir”, translates as “channel filler” and it comes about because she is said to have used sorcery to fill the channels of Hålogaland in Norway with fish during famine in the area. As she settled in Bolungarvík, she did the same with Kvíarmið, which are the same fishing grounds our fish comes from today.

The location

Westfjords

The Westfjords are a large peninsula in northwestern Iceland characterized by deep fjords , steep mountains, fantastic birdlife, clean air and rich fishing grounds. Good natural harbors in many of the fjords and their proximity to fishing areas are vital for the local economy. Westfjords are one of the least populated quarters of Iceland and there is no large scale industrial companies or polluting industry operating in the peninsula, therefore the Westfjords are an industrial free zone. The Westfjords are a true natural pearl in our unspoiled country, well worth visiting.

Bolungarvík

The production facility is based in Bolungarvík, a small fishing village located approximately 14 kilometers from Ísfjörður at the Westfjords peninsula. The distance from the capital city Reykjavík is approximately 473 kilometers. Bolungarvík is well positioned close to abundant fishing grounds and it is known as the oldest fishing community in Iceland. This small town is popular among turists for for hiking, horse riding and birdwatching.
